Community Kick Off for Relay For Life

Friday, January 22nd 6pm

The City of McKinney put out a press release on January 12th that McKinney Main Street is partnering with Relay For Life to host a Community Kick Off in the old courthouse (now the McKinney Performing Arts Center, MPAC) on January 22nd.  The Relay will take place on the night of April 30th at the Ballfields at Craig Ranch. The kick off will be an opportunity for the community to meet up, learn how to form a team, sign up as a survivor or caregiver, purchase luminaria, become a sponsor or serve on a committee.  The Kick Off will be free and open to anyone interested in supporting the Relay For Life event as a participant or supporter.

There will be live entertainment provided by Jon Christopher Davis of Lone Star Attitude. You may have also heard him play out at Wales Manor at their Music Under the Stars. Davis has written songs for performers such as Dolly Parton, Hal Ketchum, Billy Ray Cyrus, Timothy B. Schmidt and Sherrie Austin.  He has also performed his own music for such bigs as Warner Brothers, Sony and MCA Records. He will be debutting a new theme song for the Relay while at the Community Kick Off.

It seems now that almost every community hosts a Relay, but McKinney’s has been especially successful.  It has been named #1 of 54 relays in the North Texas area and is bigger than the relays for Dallas, Ft. Worth, San Antonio and Austin.  For any unfamiliar with the event, it is a overnight event in which participants walk a track throughout the night, live bands keep everyone awake, entertained and energized, and those who have had cancer or who have been lost to the disease are honored.  The hours of the night correspond to the stages of the cancer survivor and the experience can be powerful and emotional.

For more information, check out the McKinney Relay For Life site  or come to the kick off (or both)!  For more information about the Kick Off, contact McKinney Main Street at (972) 547-2660.
