A cool new event has been schedule for June downtown. Mark your calendars now for the first ever “Bike The Bricks” bicycle race through the downtown streets. The McKinney Main Street program has partnered with McKinney Velo, a local competitive cycling organization, to host this TXBRA North Regional Cup Event on Friday, June 11, 2010 from 5 pm to 11 pm. The purse for the event has been announced and is a whopping $15,000.
This is a closed course “crit” event. I had to look up what a “crit” was and it turns out to be short for “criterium”, a short course often run on closed off city-streets. And that is exactly what this will be. The race will begin in front of The Pub, go around Mitchell Park, go up Louisiana just past the Courthouse, turn north on Tennesee, go up to the City Hall and go west on Hunt Street, then north on Johnson, turn back east on Lamar Street (going past Total Health Chiropractic and the library and return back to the square on Kentucky. I know that’s a mouthful. Check out the course map on the official site.
There will be one race, the Mayorial Challenge, that will be a shorter course starting at Mitchell Park and riding around Micthell Park and the Courthouse Square (close to the same path as the Krewe of Barkus Dog Parade except that they will go all the way around Mitchell Park). You don’t have to be a pre-licensed cyclist for this one but you will have to buy a one-day license and wear appropriate head gear. Prizes in the Mayoral Cup will be valuable gift certificates to local businesses (e.g. a night at The Grand Hotel).
The race schedule is available on the offical web site www.bikethebricks.com, but here’s a quick lay out:
5:00 to 5:45 Category 4/5 race (Mayoral Challenge) $25 fee, 5 non-cash awards
5:55 to 6:55 Cateogory 3 race $30 fee , $2,000 split between 20 racers
7:05 to 7:50 Category 4 race $30 fee, $1,000 split between 10 racers
8:00 to 8:50 35+/1/2/3 race $35 fee, $2,000 split between 20 racers
9:30 to 10:45 Pro/1/2 $35 fee, $10,000 split between 20 racers
One race will be a “Grand Lap” where one racer will get a $1,000 award for the best time. It could be any one of the laps. No one will know until it is announced and it could be announced at any time, including during the the lap itself.
The official’s stand will be set up on the corner of Church and Louisiana next door to The Pub. Michelob Ultra will be sponsoring a beer garden across the street from the official’s stand in the parking lot next to Mitchell Park and beer, wine and food will be available. Live entertainment is scheduled there from 6:15 to 11:00 and will include Jon Christopher Davis of Lone Star Attitude, the Maylee Thomas Band and The Buster Brown Band.
I may be weird but I think the neatest part of the whole thing is that the winner of the Pro race will have his or her name engraved on a brick in Virginia Street at the finish line! What a way to make your mark on McKinney!
Discounted hotel accommodations are available at The Grand Hotel downtown, Holiday Inn & Suites on Craig Drive and the Best Western on Wilson Creek. Promotion codes needed for the special rates are available on the registration page.
