Well, I’m hearing through the grapevine that the demolition of the courthouse on McDonald Street will begin this weekend. I was hoping that building would be saved and used for a college campus but, sigh, it was not to be. My understanding is that the city plans to build a green municipal complex in its stead and I am hoping that, given a blank slate, they will build something really unique with some historic flourishes. I haven’t heard anything like that but I am hoping.
Chestnut Square sent out an e-mail asking Farmer’s Market patrons to use the North parking lot this weekend due to the demolition of the courthouse. The summer’s Farmer’s Market will continue until October 31st and then the winter Farmer’s Market will start up some time after that. They expect their parking to be somewhat limited until sometime in December and anticipate that fall patrons will need to use the parking lots to the west of Chestnut Square.
Main Street Magic & Fun Company will be giving free magic lessons at the Farmer’s Market tomorrow in the Wilmeth School House at Chestnut Square.
The Echo Art exhibit will be open to the public this weekend at Laura Moore Fine Arts Studio and in the McKinney Performing Arts Center (the old courthouse on the square). You’ll need to go during the day because it closes at 5.
There is also a juried photography exhibit, “Clicks”, from 7 to 10 pm at the McGroup Studio in the Historic Cotton Mill at 610 Elm Street, Suite 700.
The Old Red Lumberyard Antique and Collectible Sale will be going on tomorrow from 8 am to 2 pm in on the east side of McDonald by the “Old Mill” buildings (600 East Louisiana). This would be the old Flour Mill, not the historic Cotton Mill. According to the Convention & Visitors Bureau’s weekly newsletter, the Old Red Lumberyard previews each month’s offerings on their Facebook page.
There are ton’s of bands playing at businesses on the square this weekend. Here is what is listed on the CVB’s weekly newsletter for this weekend:
Cadillac Pizza Pub – Broken Code (Friday), Maylee Thomas Band (Saturday)
Cafe Malaga – Tania Cordobes Quartet (Friday), Tu Tones (Saturday)
Landon Winery – Steve Brummet (Friday), Joel Foy (Saturday)
Lone Star Wine Cellars – Ryan Michael Galloway (Friday), Steve Rose (Saturday)
Spoons Cafe – Michael Anderson & Soul Vacation (Friday), Eric Erickson (Saturday)
I hope to be down on the square sometime over the weekend. If I can catch some pictures of the courthouse demolition, I’ll post them on Sunday.
Until next time,
