I recently got confirmation that the soon-to-open Local Yocal is, in fact, connected to Genesis Beef. If you haven’t heard of Genesis Beef before, they have been in the spotlight the past few months as the supplier of grass-fed, hormone free beef to The Square Burger, a popular new gourmet burger restaurant on the square.
Local Yocal will be opening where Hamm’s Custom Meats used to be (next to Main Street Magic & Fun Company) sometime near the beginning of November. According to Matthew Hamilton, owner of Genesis Beef, they are working towards opening on November 1st but will certainly be open by mid-November. They will be adjusting their hours to demand, currently planning to open to the public by 10 AM (they fill commercial orders in the morning so they’ll definitely be there before that and an earlier opening is possible) and staying open until 7PM to give people time to come in and get supplies for grilling that evening. They may eventually open or close earlier based on demand after they can get a feel for what the public wants (so be sure to stop in and tell them what YOU want). They will stay open later for special events and on Second Saturdays. They will be accepting credit cards, so you don’t have to remember to have your checkbook with you.
So what is going to be so special about Local Yocal that you should leave the supermarket butcher block to come here? Plenty. For one thing, Local Yocal is not just going to be about Genesis Beef. As a long time Farmer’s Market vendor over in Adriatica, Local Yocal is bringing a touch of the Farmer’s Market with them. They’ll be including different types of meat from other ranches as well as a variety of other products not necessarily appropriate for grilling (although the lavender might smell good on the grill). Several local farms will be providing seasonal vegetables and fruits. Their goal is to have 80% of the store’s products being grown or made within 100 miles of 75069 (our zip code).
Here was a list “off the top of his head” of the vendors that will have their products at Local Yocal and there may be more additions as they get rolling (he actually said that more were being added daily). Local Yocal’s goal is to be a market place for many of the Farmer’s Market vendors they’ve met at Adriatica who don’t have retail locations.
Double G Family Farms – pasture raised chicken
Phelen Farms – pasture raised pork
Atoka Lamb – grass fed lamb
Purple Ranch – From Royce City, this vendor boasts 37 lavender products in the form of soaps, bath salts, candles, linen spray, oil, tea bags and wands.
Grapevine Grains – From Grapevine, they specialize in freshly milled grains and hand rolled oats. They make granolas, muesli, cookies, muffins, and pancake, cookie and cornbread mixes.
Aduro Bean – From Ft. Worth, locally roasted fair trade coffee and teas.
Boylan’s Natural Soda – Not actually local, I don’t think, but a good fit for Local Yocal’s product line. The formula for their Birch Beer is still based on the original “elixir” developed in 1891.
Dublins Dr. Pepper – From Dublin, Tx, Dublins boasts to be the oldest Dr. Pepper bottler in the world and still uses the original formula (using Imperial Pure Cane sugar).
I couldn’t find links for these two, but they will also have their products at Local Yocal:
- Love a Luffa- Luffa scrubs and luffa art
- Daily Harvest-East Teas-Organic dairy products
Excited yet? I am. This is a SUPER idea. Thank you Mr. Hamilton!
Until next time,
