More Doings on the Square Mother’s Day Weekend

First off, a shout out to Chef Robert at Patina Green.  Congratulations on winning the Chef Challenge! Check out their great blog post with tons of photos from the event.

Wow, we are getting under way with the hectic schedule.  More and more activities are being planned and there is so much to see and do! I can’t keep up with everything, so be sure to check out for a great web site designed for just that.  Here’s are some more events that I’ve heard about since my last post:

The only Cinco de Mayo celebration that I’ve heard of downtown that is actually on May 5th is Aparicio’s third annual Cinco de Mayo from 7 to 10 pm.  They are featuring live music by  Dacado Vega and Bloodrich.  From a quick google, it looks like they’ve been playing mostly Dallas clubs like Club Muddy Waters and House of Blues.  This official Dacado Vega and Bloodrich video (below) starts slow but gets going about a minute and half in.  It reminds me of the funk of Morris Day with a Prince-like falsetto.

The City’s Cinco de Mayo will be on Saturday night from 7 to 9 pm in Settler’s Park and will feature Mariachi Michoacan.  That’s all I’ve heard of that is Cinco de Mayo related downtown.  Anyone else hear of anything?

The annual art show is also scheduled at the Towne Creek Apartments from 12 to 6 Friday  and Saturday.  Towne Creek Apartments is an assisted living residence 506 S. Graves, not far from downtown. This show features the artwork of resident seniors, some of whom are not able to make it to receptions out and about town and would love to have some visitors drop by to see them and their artwork. This is a definite stop on my list.

This Saturday Chestnut will be having a book signing by Fred Tarpley, author of “Wood Eternal: The Story of Osage Orange, Bois d’Arc, etc” and their first Bois d’Arc Wood Eternal Crafters Event from 8 am until 2 pm. This might be a good place for photographers.  There’s supposed to be someone dressed as a tree and I’m tempted to go just to get a shot of that.

I’m  also planning to drop by the McKinney Performing Arts Center downtown to cast my ballot in early voting for the city elections. We have a school bond on the ballot and city council candidates from Districts 2, 4 and At Large. If you haven’t been keeping up with the campaigns, Town Square Buzz has video interviews with all the candidates and there’s a link to the direct mailer for the school bond on the MISD website. The At Large race has five candidates and is a very active race. It’s definitely going to make for an interesting Election Night on the Square.

Early Voting at MPAC until the 10th

To recap the restaurants on the square doing something special for Mother’s Day:

Gather will be having brunch, lunch and tea selections 10 to 3.

The Pantry will be having a buffet from 11:00 to 2:30.

Cafe Malaga is having brunch 11 to 3.

Gregory’s Bistro will be rolling out a new menu for Mother’s Day weekend.  Make reservations now for Friday or Saturday.  They will probably book out, if they haven’t already.

Rick’s Chophouse will be having brunch 10 to 2:30.

Churchill’s Pub will be opening at 8:00 am.

Town Square Buzz  is compiling a list of all  McKinney (and nearby) area restaurants that have something going on for Mother’s Day so be sure to check that out and add to their list if you know of more places with something going on for Mother’s Day.

btw, Old Red Lumberyard is trying to get to 1000 fans before their next sale (next weekend).

I’m looking forward to the weekend.  Can you tell?

Until next time,

Happy Shopping!
