One of the things you’ve got to love about McKinney is how it can be voted 5th best place to live in the country, be home to one of the largest master planned communities in Texas, have a burgeoning technology sector, and we still have a feed store right off of the downtown square. The Collin County Feed & Seed store always grabs my eye. A skilled photographer could take some really memorable shots of that building.
Honestly, I sometimes drive down Chestnut Street but I don’t think I’ve looked up at the shops there in several months. Besides the feed store, there’s Jeremy’s Barbershop and Competitive Hardwoods, but, other than that, not much for the casual shopper. Until now. Fru-gals, a “resale shop with a twist”, opened next to the feed store sometime in June. Run by McKinney natives Alex and Sheri Fowler, Fru-gals is somewhere between a thrift shop and an antique store with some very notable differences.
First and foremost, the Fowlers are determined to carry unique, one of the kind items at very affordable prices. They pick from estate sales and garage sales but they also have 1,100 square feet of usable space that they are rapidly filling with unique vendors offering a wide variety of goods. From specially selected designer wedding dresses to handmade birdhouses, they already have a decent assortment of vendors selling a good variety of things and more vendors are coming. They’ve just announced the arrival of two new ones, PeepsKeeps and Zoe Krazy, on their Facebook page.
Another unique concept to Fru-gals is their Donation Program. They’ll accept donations of gently used household items and donate 10% of the resale value of those items to the charity of the donator’s choice.
One of their vendors, HM Bridal Outlet, is a great addition for downtown McKinney, which is increasingly the venue of choice for a lot of local weddings. Frankly, it’s hard to believe that we have so many popular venues, planners, bakeries and even florists but, before now, no wedding dresses. Fitting with the theme of the store, HM hand selects dresses from designers and retail outlets from all over the world that won’t break the bank. HM Bridal is based in Plano and also has a location in Ireland.
The dress on the form in the picture below is in the range of the mid-300’s.
Besides affordable wedding dresses, the other niche that I really see that Fru-gals is going to fill is in musical equipment. If you have ever been a musician (or financially linked to one), you know that the “accessories” can get pricey but are absolutely necessary. As you can see in the picture below, they have several pieces that could easily set you back a cool grand when purchased new. I asked Alex while I was in if they would be able to maintain a constant inventory on the electronics and he felt that that wouldn’t be a problem.
I think the electric guitar is from a separate vendor. Perhaps it would be a good gift for the head banger in your life?
If you find yourself down by Mom & Popcorn Candy Company or The Pantry, I strongly suggest that you walk one more block and turn the corner onto Chestnut. Stop in for a chat with the Fowlers. They are part of what makes our downtown great!
Until next time,
